Scott has been in a car accident

What happened?
Scott Citron was in a very bad car accident this week. He was in LA doing some 3rd shift training and apparently on his way back to his hotel, he was in an accident, sometime around 3am late Tuesday night (early Wed morning). The car went off a fifteen foot embankment. His brother-in-law is pursuing more info via police reports.

Where is Scott?
Scott is currently in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at Long Beach Memorial Hospital in California.

Is his family with him?
Scott's wife Jennifer is with him. Both Scott's and Jen's extended families are based on the west coast and are with them as well.

What is Scott's condition?
Scott has sustained serious injuries (numerous broken and fractured bones including legs, ankles, shoulders, ribs, vertabrae). The doctors have deliberately kept him under sedation, and will do so for another day or so. He has already undergone an operation yesterday to staunch bleeding in one leg. Scott is also currently on a ventilator - the doctors estimate that he will be taken off this system by the end of the weekend, if all goes well.

The good news is that doctors don't expect any paralysis nor brain damage as he has responded well to tests and the surgeries so far.

What can we do?
Jennifer is very grateful for all of the kind thoughts and consolations that she has already received, and is very encouraged to know how many people in our community know and regard Scott.

Flowers are not allowed in ICU and therefore, sending flowers or gifts at this point is not appropriate. Jen did say that cards would be welcome. One may also leave thoughts, prayers, and words of encouragement here in the comments on this blog. In this way, Scott can read through them when he is awake and able to.

For now, the best we can do is be patient while we keep Scott in our thoughts and prayers.

As more information becomes available about Scott's condition, we will update this blog. Feel free to subscribe using the RSS feed links in the right margin of this page.

It was very fortunate that Jen was already out in LA, but eventually she and the rest of the family will need to fly back and forth between NYC and LA to pick up stuff and handle things.

My suggestion is that anyone who has tons of frequent flier miles, leave a post here saying that they are willing to donate the miles to Jen.

If this is anything like what my sister went through after a car crash, it could take up to six months before Scott can leave the hospital.

Debbie and I are thinking of you (Scott and Jen) and sending you well wishes. I know that sounds so stilted, but a comment in a blog isn't exactly the easiest way to express the depth of our feelings. Get well soon, dang it!

It's so hard to imagine what Scott's going through — and what Jen is going through with him. Broken bones and bruised emotions...

In lieu of flowers, I'm sending bouquets of healing energy their way.

(Scooter! Get well and get up to Portland so I can buy you a martini!)

Scott, Jennifer and family:

Your news hit like a punch in the stomach for me. I am so saddened for what you have to go through and the long recovery it will take. Scott, you are undoubtedly special to have come through this with a decent prognosis, albeit a painful one. You are obviously meant for much in this world, and not just as a friend to the many who love you.

Get well soon and lean on all of us who are so anxious to offer support. (if for not for your sake, but for us, dammit!)

When you are well enough to read this, Scott, I have some advice for you: Take advantage of the heavy medication to take your designs in a new, psychedelic direction.

Even though you may not be up to using Creative Suite right away, take some notes and make some sketches with Crayons while heavily influenced by the pain killers. Then, when you are fully recovered (hopefully soon) and no longer taking morphine (hopefully not so soon) you can refer back to your sketches as inspiration for a new dawn in the design career of Scott Citron.

And I would like to be the first to see some of your new work...soon, please.

Hey Scott, it was just terrible news to hear what happened, I'm so sorry. You're in my thoughts daily, and it gives me hope to know that you're in great hands over there, and that your family is near. Sheesh ... and in the line of duty, too! Adobe should award you the Purple InDesign Training Heart. (Or maybe that should be the CMYK Heart.) Well I hope when you read this (or hear someone reading it to you) it makes you smile a bit. I wish I could be there, Scott. I hope to see you soon, banged up maybe but with some interesting tales to tell.
